Now the 69-year-old is facing life in prison for allegedly murdering his son, an openly gay man.

The Los Angeles County district attorney’s office told the Associated Press that Issa had previously threatened to kill Amir because of his sexuality.

The murder was committed because of the victim’s sexual orientation and because of the defendant’s perception of that status and the victims’ association with a person and a group of that status.

Ten days prior to his death, Amir posted on Facebook that he was worried his parents, brother and sister are “literally controlling me in my sleep” and that “they tell people to rape and molest me and make it seem like I enjoy that.”

He went on to claim, ”If there is a devil or evil spirit, I truly believe it manifests itself in my family.”

Amir also posted a bizarre video, in which he asks his parents if they have engaged in certain sex acts.

“That’s not appropriate for a child to ask his parents,” Rabihah replies. While, Shehada calls his son a “pervert” and tells him, “None of your relatives want to have anything to do with you.”

The crime has the LGTB movement outraged, but friends and neighbors claim the situation is not so black and white, and that drugs and mental illness were also a factor.

Meanwhile, Issa insists he didn’t kill his wife, and maintains that he shot his son in self-defense.

Issa told cops that he armed himself with a shotgun after discovering Rabihah dead in their bathroom. And claims he then saw Amir, who threatened him with a knife, and was forced to shoot him in self-defense.

However, not everyone sees Issa as the villain.

Joel Munoz, a neighbor of 15 years, says Issa had regularly complained to him about his son’s alleged problems with drugs and mental illness, and that Amir was known to be violent.

“He was a good guy. The son was a bad guy,” Munoz claims. “I’m so sorry for the old man.”

Doerbecker’s investigation has uncovered a turbulent and contentious relationship between the father and son, in addition to frequent fighting between husband and wife.

Issa was arrested last Friday and charged with one count of premeditated murder, stemming from the death of his son.

At time of posting, no charges have yet been filed in relation to the death of his wife.
