Dressed in an oversized fur coat over nothing but a shirt, shorts, and high heels, RIri brought a Bad Gal Aretha vibe to the proceedings.
Rihanna charmed the audience with her simple and earnest words of gratitude. She said she hoped to inspire girls to be themselves, which she insisted is ‘half the battle’. Her message of self-acceptance was clearly heartfelt and the result of a deep personal commitment.
She thanked the organization for celebrating black girls, ‘in a world that doesn’t celebrate us enough.’
She also recalled her mother and grandmother as the strongest women she knew, and expressed her hope to one day be the mother of a ‘black girl who rocks.’
